3 Things I Learned About Pop Music In 2018

I am not what people would call a music aficionado by any means, but I do know that I cannot go for too long without bathing myself in melodious tunes. While there are some people who are stuck in one genre, I find myself listening to things that are in a range of categories. Pop music has been one constant for many years, but I realize that there are 3 things I never knew about it until recently.

1. I learned that many of the most recent artists that grace the charts are not from the US. I know that there were many people from the UK who were really big in the 1980s, yet somewhere down the line things shifted so they were not as prevalent as they once were. Earlier this year, I realized that so many of the more popular artists out there these days, like Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa are not native to this country. To be honest, I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing in general, but as long as they keep making hits I don’t mind.

2. Another thing that I figured out was the fact that being a huge pop star does not stop you from being the focus of people who do not have good intentions, even in public. When Ariana Grande performed at the funeral for Aretha Franklin, I was shocked by all of the people on stage ogling her like she was a piece of meat. Sure, she had on a short dress, but that did not excuse the barbarians looking at her like she was a fawn and they were bears in the woods.

3. When it comes to making music, you can do anything you want and still be a star in some people’s eyes. I have heard so many rumors this year, like the fact that R. Kelly has allegedly kept women in dungeons and Bette Midler has compared oppressed women to oppressed African-Americans. This has not stopped people from calling themselves fans. I am not sure I could do the same.

While I know I will never stop listening to pop music, I think it is funny that all of these things have been happening and most people have no idea. It sort of makes you think every time you listen to certain artists, but it will never make me stray from the genre as a whole; it is part of who I am.

Pop Music Is Getting Better All Of The Time

I am one of those people who really loved pop music in the 80s and 90s. The problem is that once the next decade rolled around, it started to bore me so much. There were a few Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera hits I liked, but nothing I heard was so good that I felt like I wanted to hear it numerous times. As a matter of fact, in 2005 I started listening to more rap music and left the pop for someone else.

Every once in a while you will hear a good song in the pop genre, but not so many that I felt compelled to go out and buy an entire album. This went on for years until I started playing SongPop several years back. Apparently, I had been missing out on so much during my pop music hiatus. There were even some songs that I heard that rivaled some of my favorites from when I was growing up.

One of the first ones that caught my attention was Bruno Mars. Never mind the fact that it seems like he has some long lost Michale Jackson obsession; the guy can sing. I remember listening to the song “Treasure” and thinking it was one of the best things I had heard in years. Some of his other songs are great as well. I definitely keep him at the top of my rotation list.

Another singer I like is Pitbull. I know that some people would not classify him as pop, but there are many songs I have heard that certainly fit this classification. The fact that he manages to have so many other artists on his albums makes it all a huge barrel of fun. I swear there is no other artist like him.

In the past few months, I fell in love with the song “New Rules” by Dua Lipa and “No Tears Left To Cry” by Ariana Grande. I never thought I would say that young pop singers would officially be back on my radar. Now I am sitting around waiting to see what the next best thing is.

I suppose that all genres experience some kind of lull, but the rut I was in when I abandoned pop was epic to me. Luckily, things are getting better and people are out there making great hits that people will adore and listen to for years to come.
